WELLS, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Police say Bath Salts are an epidemic that seems to be spreading around the country. Bangor was one of the first cities to see a surge in use of the drug.

Law enforcement in other Maine cities and towns are learning from Bangor's hard-earned experience.

Lieutenant Thomas Reagan has become an expert on bath salts. He travels around the country giving talks to law enforcement and first responders about the drug. He gave a presentation to first responders in York County on Wednesday. He says it's important for them to know how to recognize when a person is under the influence of bath salts, and the appropriate way to approach them.

"These are medical emergencies," Reagan said. "They just present themselves as law enforcement issues. These people need medical help more than law intervention."

Lt. Reagan has traveled as far as Seattle to give presentations on bath salts. He is scheduled to give another presentation coming up in Minnesota.
