MT. CHASE, Maine (NEWS Center)--Cooler temperatures, fall colors and hunters orange mean it's open season for moose hunting. Opening day was officially September 24th and hunters have already brought in many moose over the thousand pound mark.
The Maine moose hunting season has three short periods in September, October and November. Wildlife Biologists say the state has one of the densest moose populations in the lower 48, with an estimated population of 76 thousand.
This year the state gave out more than 37 hundred moose hunting permits by lottery.
After getting a moose, a hunter must wait two years before applying for another moose hunting permit. Hunting without a permit can result in serious fines and even jail time.
