OAKLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A head coach at Messalonskee High School has resigned. His resignation came after the school district started an investigation into his coaching practices.

School officials began investigating Wes Littlefield after parents of a player of his complained that he punched their sons face mask. Littlefield believes he did nothing wrong but was suspended with pay during the investigation.

Littlefield says he did not punch the player but admits he hit the face mask with an open hand and then told the player to take a lap. Littlefield says he coached football in the school district for 12 years and is disappointed by the way the district is handling the situation.

Superintendent Gary Smith says his first concern is for the safety of the students. The school district has finished its investigation and the police are now involved. At the moment there are no charges against Littlefield.

The Assistant Varsity and Junior Varsity coaches have stepped in to coach the team. School officials say they are looking for a new head coach and it's not likely Littlefield will return.
