AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - The Maine attorney general's office says a North Carolina company that agreed to preserve a historic landmark in Augusta has failed to do so and threatens to sue if nothing is done by Oct. 1 to prevent further damage to the site.
A letter dated Wednesday to Thomas Niemann of Main Street I LLC says the company has breached agreements to protect the Kennebec Arsenal, a National Historic Landmark, and says the property has been damaged by vandalism, thefts and weather.
The property is considered the best surviving example of a 19th Century military complex of its kind. Its granite structures, dating back to 1828, were supposed to be upgraded for residential and commercial use.
Niemann did not immediately respond Thursday to a call or email about the matter.
