The home life of Winslow Homer
PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Portland Museum of Art is about to show the public the world of Winslow Homer in a way they've never seen before. The artist's Prouts Neck studio, where he painted some of his most important works, has been restored. The museum is offering limited tours, and it has put together a special collection of Homer's paintings for an exhibit to celebrate the restoration.
Museum Director Mark Bessire hopes that together, the exhibit and studio will allow visitors to experience Maine the way Homer did, and give them a greater appreciation for the Maine artists who both came before and are out there today. Bussire said, "You walk out on the piazza, and you look out at the water. And you get it. Just, every day he was out here walking. He was not taking photographs of waves and painting them. He's actually living the very experience that he paints."
The exhibition Weatherbeaten: Winslow Homer and Maine opens September 22 at the Portland Museum of Art. If you are not a member, it costs $5 above museum admission to go.
The 2 1/2 hour guided tours of the Winslow Homer Studio run Tuesday through Sunday at 10:30 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 2 p.m. The fall tour season runs from September 25-December 2.
