KITTERY, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The U.S. Navy has awarded a $94 million contract for planning and repair work on the USS Miami.

The Navy awarded the contract Friday to a team lead by General Dynamics Electric Boat to provide design and planning services, repair material ordering, and pre-fabrication efforts required to repair the USS Miami.  Huntington Ingalls Industries will be assisting General Dynamics Electric Boat with the effort.  The contract includes an option worth an additional $6 million.

The USS Miami was severly damaged by fire earlier this year while in dry dock at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery.  It suffered $450 million in damage, and a former shipyard worker is accused of setting the fire and is awaiting trial in federal court in Portland.  24-year-old Casey Fury told Navy investigators he set the fire because he was feeling anxious and wanted to go home.
