ACADIA NATIONAL PARK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- Many residents and visitors to Maine will be out on Mount Desert Island this weekend to celebrate the night sky.
It's the 4th annual 'Acadia Night Sky Festival.' There will be star gazing programs offered at Sand Beach and many other spots in the park over the course of the weekend.
The festival is organized each year to highlight the vast amount of stars that can be seen at Acadia and in all parts of Downeast Maine. From the island you can clearly see the Milky Way at night as well as the Big Dipper. In all, officials say more than 10 million stars can be seen by the naked eye.
"The idea behind the festival is to get local residents...people from Maine..people from everywhere to sort of appreciate and look up at the sky," said John Kelly, who is the park planner at Acadia, "and understand how unique it is for the east in particular to be able to have that resource that you can't find in urban areas."
The festival will running at the park through Sunday.
