SOLON, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Each year schools from across the country are recognized as Blue Ribbon Schools. Solon Elementary was one of the two schools in Maine, and one of 269 schools in the country to receive the award for its student's high academic performances on state tests.

Solon Elementary Principal Jean Butler said her school won the award for the students high test scores from the state assessment tests from last school year.

Solon Elementary was officially given its Blue Ribbon status last Friday, and Butler said even though the students are the ones who take the test, it takes support from the parents and hard work from the teachers to help students earn those test scores.

"We have a pretty veteran staff of people that have been working in education and working together for a long time which makes a real difference. They're used to working in collaboration, looking at test data, figuring out strategies that will help students do better not just on the test, but in general to do better in their learning," Butler said.

The other school in Maine to receive the National Blue Ribbon recognition was Hope Elementary school.
