PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The premier of Nova Scotia says he's committed to subsidizing a new ferry service between Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and Maine.
Ferry service ended in 2009 when Bay Ferries Ltd. stopped operating The Cat between Nova Scotia, Portland and Bar Harbor. The Nova Scotia government said it could no longer subsidize the service.
But provincial Premier Darrell Dexter says he'd commit to finding a new operator and providing $21 million over seven years to help subsidize ferry service across the Gulf of Maine.
Portland, Maine, Mayor Michael Brennan says he's pleased by Dexter's announcement, though he was still without many details.
The report on reviving the service says Portland would be the best U.S. port to host a cruise-style ferry service. It says it's unlikely the service could start before 2014.
