PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Today is a national day of service and remembrance, and to honor the day, United Way of Greater Portland is holding a food drive in Portland and Westbrook.

People were dropping off non-perishable food items at Canal Plaza in Portland and on Main Street in Westbrook this morning.  United Way is accepting any canned food item until 2:00pm today.  Healthy goods like low-sodium soups, whole grains, and canned fish are a few items that are in high demand.

"Well, I was in New York on September 11th, and I can tell you that there was no greater sense of community not only for New York, but the nation that day," Sterling Kozlowski, Campaign Chairman of United Way, said. "I think today reflects that same spirit."

The food drive is happening until 2:00pm in both Portland and Westbrook.
