SACO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Within the next few days Saco's Animal Control Officer will begin trapping and removing feral cats from the Camp Ellis area.
The controversial cats became the center of a lawsuit filed by one of the neighbors. The resolution of that legal action calls for the city to now remove them and taken them to a local animal shelter for adoption.
People who have been feeding and caring for the cats for years are not happy with the plan. They say the cats provide a real benefit to the neighborhood.
"During the time that they've been here, they've kept the rat population absolutely at bay, also mouse population too", said Eleanor Saboski, a supporter of the cats.
Saco Police are urging neighbors who own cats to a put a collar on them to prevent the animal control officer from taking them away.
