(NEWS CENTER) -- A lot of things go into getting the kids ready to head back to school, and many of those things cost more money than ever before.
The Huntington Bank released its 2012 Huntington Backpack Index and the numbers that estimate how much families will spend on back to school supplies, fees, etc. keep increasing. Last year, families were expected to spend nearly 25% more than in 2010. This year, add another 6% to that, and families can expect to spend 31% more than they did two years ago.
Here's how it breaks down:
For elementary students, costs rose 3.4% from $530 to $548. Middle school costs per student rose 5.8% from $684 to $724. High school costs per student rose 2.2 percent from $1,093 to $1,117.
These numbers include a variety of costs including a minor hike in school supplies, musical instrument rental fees, and other school sponsored extracurricular activities like pay-to-play sports fees.
