SACO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - It was a close vote, but the Saco City Council decided against a proposal to sell the former fire station.
The fire department moved out of the building in the Spring of 2011 and since then it has sat vacant.
There have been several proposals to deal with the building, from selling it to renovating it to demolishing it and starting over.
In a 4-3 vote Monday night, the Councilors voted against selling the building and decided to wait on deciding whether to demolish it.
The building, built in 1939 as part of the Works Progress Administration, has some sentimental value to the town. But when the fire department petitioned for a new location, they did so saying that the structure just has too many flaws to validate the cost of renovation.
The issue of demolition will return to the council chambers in mid-September.
