BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- The man suspected of burglarizing several downtown Bangor businesses last month has been arrested in Florida.
A Broward County detective arrested 18-year old Jonathan Matute of Bangor on Wednesday night. Police in the Queen City suspect Matute of hitting five downtown businesses last month.
Over the course of July, somebody burglarized a floral shop, marketing offices and a photography studio and made off with thousands of dollars in goods. A national notice led police to Matute in Florida. Authorities say he was arrested after allegedly trying to steal tools from an area Sears and assaulting a security guard at the store.
Police in Bangor say the attention the case got helped them get their suspect.
"The tips we got sped this arrest up because of people wanting to get involved and do the right thing," remarked Sgt. Paul Edwards.
Matute is being held without bail in Florida and is already facing charges for one of the burglaries in Bangor. Police expect more to come as their investigation continues.
