PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Former U.S. Rep. Peter Kyros has died at age 86. Kyros, a Democrat, represented Maine's 1st Congressional District from 1967 to 1975 during a turbulent period that included the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal. Initially supportive of the war policies, he later spoke out against them.
The Portland native worked on war ships in Bath at the start of World War II and enlisted in the Navy in 1943. He went on to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy and after leaving the Navy in 1954, received a law degree from Harvard Law School. He was recruited by Sen. Edmund Muskie of Maine to run for Congress in 1966.
Joseph Gawler's Sons Inc. in Washington, D.C., said a funeral service for Kyros will be held Sunday. Kyros died Tuesday.
