NEWS CENTER- In a few weeks, recent Madison alum Seth Sweet will be in Norfolk, Virginia, continuing his career at the next level. The Old Dominion bound golfer would like to pack up one more thing before he heads south: the Maine Amateur Championship.
The two-time state champ leads after the first-round the 93rd annual event over at Sunday River in Newry after shooting a two under 70. He's two strokes up on last year's leader after 18 holes, Mike Doran (72).
There's a two-way tie for 3rd place with Len Cole and South Portland's Mike O'Brien, who each had a 73. One shot back lies a five-way tie for fifth, which includes two-time defending champ Ryan Gay. Gay is seeking his 4th title overall.
The 2nd round of the 54-hole tournament resumes Tuesday at 7 am.
