In the time of a kitchen fire, it's hard to remain calm. But staying calm and remembering a couple of kitchen safety tips may save your life.

If there's a fire on the stove top, find your oven mitt and slowly place the cover over the flames and leave the cover on for at least 10 to 20 minutes to ensure that the fire is put out. Then turn off the stove.

The last thing you want to do is put water on a fire, especially if you're cooking with grease. Flames will immediately grow and overtake the kitchen.

There's a product on the market that can prevent grease fires from ever spreading. It's called Stove Top Fire Stop and comes with two canisters that are placed on the inside of your range hood. Shortly after flames from a pan reach the canister, a powder is released that immediately extinguishes the fire.
