PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- With the recent jump in oil prices, a Maine Environmental group is seizing the oportunity to highlight the cost savings of solar energy.
The group, Environment Maine, released a new report today showing Mainers could save millions of gallons of oil each year by installing solar hot water systems. The report also found that could save Mainers a lot of money and reduce pollution.
Supporters of solar power say its a proven technology that can greatly reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
"We have long had the technology and the know how to harness the zero cost of heat from the sun, to heat our water", said Nathaniel Meyer of Environment Maine.
The solar heating systems costs about $11,000, but state and federal rebates can knock that down by a few thousand dollars.
