PORTLAND, Maine (AP) -- College presidents are making big bucks around the country but in Maine the three most prominent private schools are behind the top pay scale.
A survey by the Chronicle of Higher Education looked at nearly 450 private colleges and what they pay their presidents.
According to the survey Elaine Tuttle Hansen at Bates College earns $432,000 between salary, retirement, bonuses and other perks.
Barry Mills at Bowdoin College makes $470,000 and William Adams of Colby College tops them all at $695,000.
However the survey shows that 30 college presidents in other parts of the country are paid more than one-million dollars. The average is between $200,000 and $600,000.
