FALMOUTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Kids with developmental disabilities lace up the skates at the Family Ice Center.

Maine Adaptive teaches kids and adults with developmental disabilities to skate and play hockey.  Ranging from ages from 5 to 30, they deal with a wide range of disabilities from Down Syndrome to Autism.  Each skater is paired up with a volunteers to help with skills, promoting exercise, and simply having a good time.

"There aren't enough programs like this for our kids, especially after they leave elementary school," says Laurie Dorrace, who's son, Nolan, has a rare muscle disorder.  "So they get the exercise, but there is also the social interaction he gets and its a chance for the parents to sit down and talk about what happening in the special needs community."

Maine Adaptive meets at the Family Ice Center in Falmouth every Sunday morning at 9:50. The equipment and ice time have all been donated.
