Group: More testing needed on health effects of wind turbines

LINCOLN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A group opposed to a wind project near the town of Lincoln says not enough testing has been done on the possible health effects of those living near turbines.

The wind turbines would run along the ridge of the Rollins mountain range between Lincoln and Lee.

The group, Friends of Lincoln Lakes, is appealing Maine's Department of Environmental Protection August decision to approve the Rollins Mountain project under the state's new "expedited wind law."

The group says the new law is unconstitutional because any appeal of a wind project automatically goes to the Maine Supreme Court, instead of starting in a lower court -- as is required in all other types of energy projects.

Maine DEP issued a statement, that says in part:

The DEP handles all applications under its jurisdiction thoroughly and with care to public concerns, regardless of the type of project. This process was transparent, thorough, and involved significant and substantive public involvement.
