BRUNSWICK (AP) --The last two planes kept at the Brunswick Naval Air Station have flown away.
The departure of the two planes ends close to 60 years of maritime patrol operations at New England's last active military base. The P-3 Orions have left for a six month deployment in Central America. After South America the Orions will make their home in Jacksonville, Florida.
The base in Brunswick now has a skeleton crew after once being home to 4,000 sailors and six patrol squadrons. The base is scheduled to close its two runways in January. Base personnel will continue to leave the base until it final close date in May 2011.
