DANFORTH, Maine (AP) -- A groundbreaking ceremony has been held for the second phase of First Wind's Stetson project near Danforth in eastern Maine.

State Sen. Kevin Raye of Washington County, who spoke at Monday's event, called it another important step forward in Maine's effort to promote homegrown clean renewable energy.

The first phase of the project, which comprised 38 turbines on Stetson Mountain, was completed in January. Stetson II will include 17 more windmills. Together, the two Stetson projects will produce 82.5 megawatts of power.

Last week, a three-turbine project that will provide power needs for Vinalhaven and North Haven islands was opened. Two other major projects that will feed into the power grid are under construction in western Maine.
