CALAIS, Maine (AP) -- The new border crossing complex between Maine and New Brunswick is now officially open for business. The formal opening for the 54-acre, $125 million Calais-St. Stephen border crossing was held Monday morning. Top federal and state officials attended the dedication. The facility opened to traffic last week. The project was paid for by the two national governments and the state of Maine and province of New Brunswick. Officials say that in 2008, 74,000 commercial vehicles and 879,000 passenger vehicles went through the old Calais border crossing. That site will remain open for noncommercial traffic.
