SOUTH PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER) -- They were stuffing trucks Saturday for the Good Shepherd Food Bank. The trucks were loaded at the Maine Mall in South Portland. The annual event helps the food bank provide for those in need, especially around the holidays. It's estimated that about 143,000 people in Maine are hungry. Good Shepherd has seen the need for help grow by about 30 percent over the past year. Canned meats and vegetables, cereal, rice, pasta, soups and juices are some of the food items Good Shepherd is looking for. For every $1 donated, the food bank can purchase and distribute $12.50 worth of food to the Greater Portland area and other communities throughout the state.
