AUGUSTA (NEWS CENTER) -- Educators met with Legislators Tuesday to discuss upcoming budget reductions and concerns with the School District Consolidation Law.

The Department of Education is working to meet a $38-million budget cut this year and is preparing for a $36-million cut next year.

Susan Gendron, Commissioner of Education, says the impact will be felt in schools throughout the State.

At the same time those opposed to the School District Consolidation Law are looking for the Legislature to make changes to the law, such as dropping the penalty.

Voters chose to keep the law on the books including the penalty for districts that do not consolidate.

Gendron says the law should be left alone to allow schools to move forward with the plan and focus their efforts on what happens in the classroom.
