BIDDEFORD, Maine (AP) -- Twenty-nine veterans, including two former war prisoners, are to receive State of Maine Silver Star Honorable Service Medals.

The state Department of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management said the public presentation will be in Saco at Thornton Academy on Thursday evening.

Among those receiving the state's formal recognition for their service are John Boland of Gorham and Robert McCartney of Kennebunk, who were both prisoners of war in Germany while serving in the Army.

Five other veterans who received Purple Hearts are being recognized as well.

Twelve of those being recognized cannot attend Thursday's formalities.
