PORTLAND (AP) -- A Newcastle man convicted of killing his father and former girlfriend wants Maine's highest court to overturn his convictions. Twenty-three-year-old John A. Okie was sentenced earlier this year to 60 years in prison for the 2007 bludgeoning death of 19-year-old Alexandra "Aleigh" Mills and the stabbing death of his father, John S. Okie, six days later. The Portland Press Herald says the Maine Supreme Judicial Court will hear his appeal on Monday. Okie's lawyer argues that the judge should have told jurors what would have happened had they found him not criminally responsible by reason of insanity. The appeal also claims that Okie's mental illness should have been considered a mitigating factor at his sentencing.
