NEW DELHI (AP) -- Indian authorities forced a U.S. plane carrying Marines to land in Mumbai today after confusion about its call sign.

A U.S. Embassy official said the plane was later allowed to resume its journey. He said the Bangkok-bound flight was diverted while in Indian airspace.

The Press Trust of India news agency said the plane came from the Middle East carrying 205 Marine commandos. It said the Marines stayed on the aircraft at the Mumbai airport while they waited for clearance from Indian authorities.

The PTI reports that the plane had civilian, but not military, clearance from Indian authorities.

After an investigation, the Indian air force gave the plane clearance to leave.
