PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER) -- The issue of healthcare reform brought nurses out to the West End of Portland Saturday.

The nurses were making house calls to encourage people to call or write their congressional delegation so they'll support a healthcare reform bill. Many of those lobbying door to door said they believe a public health insurance option is necessary to lower costs, improve care and keep insurance companies honest.

The nurses said too many patients avoid going to the doctor because their insurance company won't cover the treatment they need.

At least one nurse said she's concerned that if insurance companies don't cover vaccines for things like H1N1 flu, patients won't get vaccinated.

The canvassing Saturday was sponsored by the American Federation Of State, County and Municipal Employees and Working America. It was done in Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Louisiana, North Dakota, Nebraska, and Ohio, as well as Maine.
