AUGUSTA (NEWS CENTER) -- Maine State Police say they have charged Kenneth McDonald, 43, with murder in connection with the death of his 80-year-old mother, Janice McDonald.

McDonald was charged by detectives this evening at the Winthrop Police Station where he had been brought for questioning.

McDonald had been taken into custody just after 1:00 p.m. on Bailey Island in Harpswell by Cumberland County sheriff's deputies. The deputies had responded to the Land's End Gift Shop after a man was reported loitering outside the store.

McDonald was charged with murder about 9:30 p.m. and transported to the Kennebec County Jail in Augusta. He will make an appearance in court later this week.

State police will still not say how Janice McDonald died. Her body was discovered inside her home Monday night.
