HARPSWELL (NEWS CENTER) -- People who live along a private beach in Harpswell say they are still finding a few syringes buried in the sand and seaweed every day.

It started last week when more than one hundred needles were discovered by some children there. The kids did the right thing. They didn't touch them. Instead they ran to get their parents.

Resident Marcie Hutchinson says she's worried about the fact that some keep turning up. She has warned her children and others to take care.

"They know not to touch them and usually when they're down here there's an adult with them," says Hutchinson.

On Thursday morning, Steve Brezinski of the Department of Environmental Protection, toured the beach and talked with neighbors. He says the source of the syringes may never be determined but he can at least gather information to turn over to the D.E.P.'s biomedical waste division.
