HARPSWELL (NEWS CENTER) -- What started as a lesiurely stroll on a Harpswell beach Wednesday morning quickly became a health hazard.

Authorities say Marcy Hutchinson and her kids found 82 used needles washed up on a private beach just in front of their home. The needles were scattered up and down the beach, many of them embedded in seaweed and buried in the sand. Hutchinson and her kids didn't take any chances.

Hutchinson picked up as many needles as she could and called the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office to get rid of them.

Officials say the needles have been taken to a local hospital where they will be properly disposed.
