ENFIELD (NEWS CENTER) -- A horse that nearly starved to death is making a miracle recovery.

18 year-old Honey dropped from 900 pounds to 450 pounds in the span of just six months. Floyd Annis adopted Honey almost four weeks ago. Back then, Honey couldn't stand up because she had lost so much muscle mass. Today she has regained almost 150 pounds and can walk and stand.

She still uses a sling that helped her recovery so that she can get back up when she sits down. Veterinarian Dr. Dennis Ruksznis treated Honey when Annis first adopted her. He says he thinks that Honey could have received enough food, the problem could have been that she wasn't eating it.

"In this horse's particular case it did not live alone and there's a certain amount of competition for the food provided," he said.

Dr. Ruksnis says that only 50% of horses in Honey's condition would have survived. Annis considers Honey's recovery to be a miracle.

"Sometimes you have to not get so emotional, you just have to go into overdrive, you just go and do your best and you get angry later," Annis said.
