SOUTH HIRAM (NEWS CENTER) -- District 55's school board is deciding whether or not to look further into the cost savings of shutting down at least one of their elementary schools.
In a report released Wednesday night by the Construction and Transporation committee, closing the Baldwin Consolidated School would save more than 168-thousand dollars.
However, parents, even school board members argue that the savings isn't necessary anymore now that they've figured out other ways to keep their budget from increasing.
That report's plan could eventually close down the three outlying elementary schools and have just a central campus in South Hiram, something parents and teachers say could be detrimental to student learning.
Currently, 83 K-4 students are enrolled at Baldwin School, if closed, those students would all travel to South Hiram Elementary School, which currently has an enrollment of more than 800 students K-8.
