LEWISTON (NEWS CENTER) -- A Bates College diver broke the school's record for the most All-American titles, and she had to go to the hospital to do it.
Kelsey Lamdin took part in her final meet, the National Championships last week at the University of Minnesota. She was warming up for her last event, the 3-meter board, when she hit her head on diving board doing a reverse 1 1/2 somersault in the pike position.
She started bleeding and had to go to the hospital to get 15 stitches. She refused anesthesia, though, so she could make it back in time to compete in the meet.
Lamdin said she never considered not finishing. She wanted to win her 8th All-American title, a school record for a diver. She did it, finishing 10th in the event. She said she hoped to finish higher, but considering the circumstances, she was pleased.
