PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER) -- Most people don't think of Portland as having a lot of forest land. But Maine's largest city has more than 300 acres of trees. The City had never done an intensive survey of its forest land until this past winter, but with the help of the Maine Forest Service and a grant from their Project Canopy Program, the City has been able to get a better understanding of the health of some of the City's forests.

The survey will show where the forests need help, either from dying trees or invasive species and provide information to care for them better. Pine Grove Park is one of the city's parcels in need of some attention.

Dennis Brennan, from the Maine Forest Service, said, "It has grown and grown without anybody's involvement for decades and decades, all the neighbors walk through here and enjoy it, but the forest has grown older and the trees are at a stage where they are very tall and kind of hazardous and they are starting to blow over in storms."

Equipped with the information from the survey, the City's land bank will hold discussions about how to move forward to improve the health of the City's diverse forest property.
