BRUNSWICK (NEWS CENTER) -- A few dozen people in Brunswick got a rare treat Saturday: the chance to see one of the first skidders run through the snow!

The late Harry Crooker retrieved the Lombard Steam Log Hauler from the Allegash in the 1960s. Only 83 Lombards are known to have been made, all around the turn of the 20th century.

They were a big advance in the logging industry because loggers no longer had to wear out their horses to pull wood. But they were dangerous. They had no brakes.

The Lombards were eventually replaced with diesel powered units. It took a lot of work to get the Crooker's Lombard moving again. Crooker and some of his workers replaced a lot of parts, and tracked down some others that were original.
