Santo 'Sam' DiPietro dies at 81

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — A longtime leader in the South Portland community has died.

Santo DiPietro, better known as Sam, was 81-years-old.

DiPietro was the son of Italian immigrants who settled on Portland's Munjoy Hill. He is best known for operating a landmark business in South Portland: DiPietro's market.

Sam DiPietro was a co-founder of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine in South Portland, a city councilor and two-time mayor of South Portland. He served four terms in the Maine Legislature.
