Some of Maine's oldest veterans honored

WESTBROOK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Westbrook Police Chief Janine Roberts and Marine Staff Sergeant Mike Merrill honored 12 of Maine's oldest veterans Friday afternoon at Avita of Stroudwater assisted living facility.

Among the 12 service men and women was a 100-year-old World War II veteran, and Viola Aliberti, an Air Force nurse who is the oldest living veteran in Yarmouth.

The veterans received certificates with messages from Governor LePage thanking them for their service. They also received coins of the military branch they served in.

Aliberti said she appreciates any time a person thanks her and other veterans for their service, not just ceremonies such as the one she participated in.

"It makes me feel very, very wonderful — really," Aliberti said. "It's such a simple thing, but I think it makes most people happy. I don't care how old they are or what they're doing for work, I think it's effective."
