Six buildings being evacuated due to gas leak in Portland

Gas leak in Portland

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Buildings in Portland were evacuated Thursday morning due to massive gas leak on Congress street. 

Fire officials are say construction workers accidentally hit a natural gas line underneath Congress Street. Fire officials evacuated a handful of nearby buildings in the area of India and Congress streets as a precaution.

A crew from the local natural gas company secured the leak around 10:00 a.m. but people are still asked to stay clear of the area.
