Seniors form bonds with therapeutic horses

NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- An unexpected friendship is forming between people from a senior living community and a group of very special horses.

Avita of Stroudwater, a facility in Wesbrook focused on memory care, has been bringing residents to Healing Through Horses ranch to spend time with a group of therapeutic horses. The seniors spend time grooming, petting, and nuzzling with the horses. Angela Mastrella, the Social Program Director at Avita at Stroudwater, says the therapy makes a lasting impression.

"They are able to connect with them without having to have spoken language," Mastrella said. "I think that's the most important thing. We actually had a resident comment that these animals understand him better than people do."

The residents visit the ranch twice a month.
