Report: Portland metro area No. 5 for volunteering nationwide

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - New data released by the federal government suggests there's a lot of volunteering going on in Maine's biggest city.

An annual report released by the government agency that oversees AmeriCorps says the Greater Portland metropolitan area ranks fifth in the country for volunteering.

The report by CNCS indicates more than 162,100 volunteers in Greater Portland gave 22.4 million hours of service worth last year. All told, it says nearly 39 percent of metro area residents reported volunteering. Also, more than half of all residents donated $25 or more to charity.

The report says that across the country nearly 25 percent of adults volunteered, for a total of about 62.6 million people volunteering.
