Former priest, teacher charged with assault pleads not guilty

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A priest and former teacher at Cheverus High School charged with sexual assault faced a judge in Portland  Friday.

He's accused of abusing a minor in Freeport during the late 1990's.

James Talbot pleaded not guilty. The judge granted the prosecution's request for $50k cash bail set, with the conditions that he does not have contact with anyone under 18 and he surrenders his passport.

Talbot worked at Cheverus until he was fired in 1998 when allegations of abuse were made.

Talbot's next court date is February 14.
