Back Cove Fire Forces Residents Out Of Their Homes Overnight

*UPDATE*:   The person whose apartment burned down tells NEWS CENTER that he was smoking in bed and fell asleep. 

This man is identified as Leo Albert... He agreed to speak to NEWS CENTER. Albert says it was his mistake that sent his apartment up in flames. 

"Apparently I dozed off and when I woke up, my hand was hot, you know? It didn't burn it just was hot and there were flames, the bed was in flames. Hell, by the time I got to call 911 the whole room was going," said Albert.

Although there is no smoking allowed in the complex Albert says he is guilty of smoking two cigarettes a day and it was his usual cigarette before bed, that destroyed his apartment.

"Now the whole apartment is ruined, but it's not me I am worried about it's the neighbors. There's a couple with a kid that lives upstairs. There's a couple with two kids that live there," said Albert as he pointed to the unit next to his.

Albert's apartment was the only unit damaged.

 

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - - Fire Officials are trying to determine what caused an overnight fire at the Princeton On Back Cove Apartments in Portland on Tuesday.

Fire Fighters said they stopped the fire quickly and no one was injured.  They also told NEWS CENTER that investigators are trying to figure out what started an apartment fire that forced residents from their homes.

Residents tell us they believe the fire started from someone smoking in their bedroom and this is a non-smoke apartment. building

There is a completely burned out mattress on the ground in the middle of the street. This led residents to believe the fire started in someone's bedroom.

According to police, approximately a dozen residents were evacuated from their homes in the middle of the night. And some have been able to return.
