Portland man found dead was hit by car, cops say

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Police now say a man who was found dead along Congress Street in Portland Tuesday afternoon was hit by a car.

The body of Edward Blumenthal, 57, was discovered in some brush near the Fore River.

The Medical Examiner found Blumenthal's cause of death was the result of blunt force trauma consistent with being struck by a vehicle, according to Portland Police.

He was last seen alive the night of September 9 -- surveillance video shows him leaving his apartment building at 30 Preble Street at 7:41 p.m. His family reported him missing Sept. 28.

Blumenthal's cellphone was found with his body, and police say it was active until Sept. 10 at 7:51 a.m. when the battery died.

Police believe he was walking east, or inbound, on Congress Street just past the Fore River crossing when he was struck by a large vehicle, possibly a truck, that was traveling in the same direction.
