PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Two new plaques now hang in the lobby of Portland's famous DiMillo's on the Water. One is dedicated to the five Maine Maritime Academy graduates who lost their lives on the El Faro.
The Portland Propeller Club is made up of mariners dedicated to growing commerce in the port. Club members commemorated two plaques on Saturday morning — one in memory of Cpt. San Juan "Sandy" Dunbar, a long-time pilot in Portland.
The other plaque honors the crew of the El Faro. Portland Propeller Club president Bill York said it's important for Maine's maritime community to remember the crew members lost.
"This loss was so overwhelming," he said. "It's nice to have a place where you can come and look at this plaque and honor these people for their dedicated duty."
The Portland Propeller Club holds regular meetings at DiMillo's and approached management with the idea of the plaques.
Manager Steven DiMillo said his family's ties with maritime culture run deep, and that the plaques were a welcome gesture.
