Police warning: Be cautious when donating to "Foundation for American Veterans"

AUBURN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Auburn Police Department is warning people about an "F" rated organization, “Foundation for American Veterans” using Veterans Day to aggressively solicit donations.

Auburn PD says random phone calls are being made throughout Maine by this phone number: 207-613-1764, soliciting contributions.  "The website Charity Watch rates this charity as an “F”.

According to police, the callers claim that all money collected will go to veterans’ hospitals and programs. However, the BBB says, "this organization has had a troubled history with state and federal law enforcement authorities.”

The BBB also says that the charity received less than 14 percent of the money raised during the fundraising campaigns.  Most of that percentage went to other contractors, salaries, and additional expenses.”
