One person dead in Liberty accident, oil truck involved

UPDATE 9:45 p.m.: The driver of the pickup truck has been identified. The sole fatality from the accident was Herman Reynolds, 70, of Belfast. The driver of the tanker truck is 56-year-old Trent Cates, of Solon.


LIBERTY, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- State Police say one person has been killed in a crash involving a car and an oil truck on Route 3 in Liberty Monday afternoon. 

State Police say the driver of a pickup was killed instantly when his truck veered into the path of an oil tanker truck on Route 3.  The crash took place near the intersection of the Marshall Shore Road.  The tanker truck driver attempted to avoid the head-on collision.  The driver of the big rig was not injured.

Police say the man killed is 70-year-old Herman Reynolds of Belfast.  The driver of the tanker truck was  56 year old Trent Cates of Solon. 

The oil truck, owned by H O Bouchard, ended up on its side in a grassy bog and Troopers say no oil has leaked.  The crash site is near Lake St. George State Park and Route 3 traffic is being diverted around the crash site utilizing side roads.
