PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then the eyebrows must be the window frame- and they may actually be the key to looking younger.
In a 2017 study published by journal Frontiers In Psychology, researchers took photos of more than 760 bare faced women of all skin colors between the ages of 20 and 80 years old. A computer system analyzed the contrast in the women's facial features, and ultimately concluded that the majority of women with fuller, more pigmented eyebrows appeared younger.
"I just saw how instantly transformative it was. That women could spend a lot of time and money on a lot of beauty services, but the brows made the highest impact," says eyebrow expert and founder of Jessica Johnson Beauty, Jessica Johnson.
Johnson has been perfecting her approach to beautiful brows for 25 years. Through tinting and concentrated refining with plucking and a wax she created, Johnson and her team at her Portland-based salon focus on enhancing each natural, unique brow and providing simple advice for at-home maintenance. Johnson says when lining your eyebrows, just fill in the gaps and build up the pigment, don't try to draw on a brow that isn't there.
"Their confidence went up just from their eyebrows being done," Johnson said of her clients.
Eyebrow tinting and shaping can cost you anywhere from $20-$50 depending on where you have it done, and can last several weeks.
For those with little hair to spare, that's where a professional like InnaYurkevich of iBrows microblading comes in.
"We've seen clients with alopecia, we've seen chemo clients, we've seen women that are just sick of penciling in their eyebrows every day," Yurkevich said.
Microblading is the process of literally tattooing lines into the top layer of skin in the brow line to simulate the look of hair, but this isn't your typical "on a whim, spring break mistake" tattoo.
"You can't have nay alcohol 24-48 hours before, and the morning of, you can't have any caffeine. No ibuprofen, no aspirin, blood thinners, fish oils, or any vitamins that thin your blood," Yurkevich explains. "Can't be pregnant, can't be breast feeding."
Microblading can cost anywhere from $500-$800 and can last up to three years with touch ups in between.
